The area that perhaps more than any other offers the chance to come across some otherworldly presence is that between the Basilica of San Pietro and Castel Sant'Angelo : the first apparition could just be of the perhaps most famous character of Ancient Rome, Julius Caesar . It is said that the ashes of the great Roman consul were preserved in the lead sphere that towered over the obelisk, later erected in St. Peter's Square in 1585 at the behest of Sixtus V. To verify that it really contained Caesar's ashes, the Pope did open a hole in the sphere: according to legend, the soul of Julius Caesar was thus freed and, from that moment, his ghost seems to appear from time to time in various parts of the city, going as far as the Colosseum!

Along Via della Conciliazione then, in the alley next to the Church of Santa Maria in Traspontina, is the home of Giambattista Bugatti, better known in Rome as Mastro Titta . Who was? It was the penultimate executioner of papal Rome: he performed 68 "justices" (death sentences) more than all his other colleagues! It is said that it is often possible to meet him, in the early hours of the morning, while he walks wrapped in his scarlet cloak, here near his house or in front of Castel Sant'Angelo , one of the places where it was customary to execute sentences. If you approach it offering yourself tobacco, better to run away: it was in fact the gesture you made before each of its execution!

Castel Sant'Angelo then offers the possibility of meeting not one but many restless souls, precisely because it was for many centuries a fearsome prison and place of numerous executions. Among all the most "famous" meeting could be the one with the young Beatrice Cenci , but only the night between 10 and 11 September, the day of her death. In fact, the young woman, accused of patricide, was sentenced to death by beheading in front of a huge crowd, including Caravaggio himself . That is why you could unexpectedly find her before you, while she wanders poor soul in pain, with her head chopped off in her hands!
