About Rome
The ides of March
The assassination of Ceasar on the 15th of March of 44 BC
Ceasar was having dinner at a friends' house near Palatine Hill. During these dinners, they had a philosophical conversation about Honor, Duty and Freedom. That night they talked about death.
2 So they asked him: "How do you see your death or how will you die?"
3 Ceasar waited a bit and replied: "Why are you asking me this question tonight?" He thought for a while and replied: "subitam celerem fast and unsuspected".
5 The night before, Ceasar had nightmares.
And had a dream that he was flying above the Earth.
And flying above the clouds spreading his hand towards Jupiter.
6 But that night, Ceasar was not the only one who had nightmares, but also his wife, Calpurnia. She dreamed that everything is getting destroyed and her husband was killed. After all these God's signs, he didn't feel like going out of the house that morning.
He was thinking about canceling the meeting at the Senate.
7 But Decimo Brutto appeared, not that Brutto who killed him, but the one who fought with him in the civil wars against the Gallic Wars.
Ceasar saw him hanging around the house and he did not get suspicious about him.
Decimo's task was to make sure that Ceaser gets to the Senate. Thanks to the historian Plutarco we have the exact conversation he used to convince Ceasar to go to the meeting. He literally took his hand and pushed him outside of the house
For this treason, Markanthony will call him la verefica - poisonous witch
8 Near the forum at the Domus Publica was where Ceasar used to live used for potifix maximus
9 At 10 am he had fired his bodyguard
He went out alone through the sacred street of the Roman forum, then passed the forum of Ceasar next to the Curia Julia – the Senate house, then he passed what is today called Piazza Venezia the Street from the street of (via delle Boteghe Oscure) and reached the theater Pompey. A stranger walked to him and gave him a piece of paper on which was written the conspiracy against Ceasar. Ceasar took the paper and put it in his Togo side like he was going to read it soon.
The man who gave him the paper was a Greek philosopher, and his name was Artimidoro and his part of Bruto e Casio Entourage. Artimidoro insisted Ceasar read it, because it was about important matters that concerned him. While Ceasar was walking through the crowd, people were waving to him, and he forgot to read the paper, and he would never read it.
10 We are at the Pompey theater where the meetings are held until the construction of the Senate was done.
That's where the conspirators of Caesar's were waiting.
Only Marcanthony was Ceasar's friend and powerful men, but the conspirators kept him with excuses outside the Senate.
It was 11 and one hour after
Ceasar went inside alone and set down. The killers went close to him like they wore honoring him, so ( Cimbro Tilio ) got close to him and grabbed him for the toga. Ceasar shouted ( in sta qui davis est) -this is violence, and Casca put a knife under his neck. Caesar tried to defend himself by grabbing the knife with his hand, but this didn't stop the killers. Wherever Ceasar looked, there was a weapon around him.
He got stabbed like a beast, trapped in their hands. Caeser said (Tu quoque, Brute, fili mi!) also, you my son now that Caesar realized nothing he could do. He took peace of his toga and put it on his face, falling with dignity.
So the exact place where Caesar died was here next to this pine.
The killers had the intention to throw his body at the Tiber river, but they didn't do it because they were scared of Marcanthony and Lepido.
The body of Caesar on the floor for hours.
While the killers went around the city shouting: "freedom, freedom", Rome was silent and scared.
The Ceasar's body was taken away by 3 slaves in a stretcher cot, and a few days later, they made the funeral. That dead Ceasar's body would become the worst weapon against the killers.
11 Caesar did not have unexpected death or a quick death
